How Much Cake is Needed?
Too Much or Too Less
A common question that stares us all in the face when we plan a party is “How much cake should we order?”.
A beautiful cake is a must at any celebration such as Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary or Baby Shower. Once the list of guests has been finalized the next important question is “How much cake should I order?”. Order too much, and you will end up with leftovers. Whereas too little and you might find yourself embarrassed for not having enough to serve all your guests.
Tips to Order the Right Size Cake
There are many ways to arrive at the ‘magical’ number however below are some pointers that work:
- Number of Guests – Decide on the number of guests at your party. It would be more helpful you could categorize your list into adults and children. Adults may have slightly bigger slices in comparison to little children.
- Additional Desserts – Depending on the occasion, list down the number of other desserts (like a smash cake, jar cakes or cupcakes) that you would be offering. Reduce the weight to accommodate the other desserts. Your guests may prefer smaller slices if they intend to taste the other desserts as well.
- Type of Cake – An airy cheesecake would be light on the palate than a denser one made up of layers of sponge and whipped cream or rich chocolate ganache.
You may find guests going in for a second helping of a cheesecake but not so much for a gateaux cake.
- Slices – A common scene at parties is to butcher the beautiful work of art into unequal slices of various shapes. Other times, the cake is quickly whisked off by that one person who has the confidence of cutting it well.
The quantity you serve would depend on the shape of the cake, size of each slice and the shape of each slice.
A circular cake can be cut into wedges or squares.
-
- Cut into Wedges – large fewer slices
- Cut into squares – small more slices
While a square or rectangular one can be cut only into squares.
It is best advised to cut into squares. Your guests can always come back for another serving if they enjoyed the first slice.
The Math
As a rule of thumb, a typical slice weighs about 70 to 100 gms. So, per slice weight multiplied by the number of guests would give the “Magical” number of how much cake should be ordered.
E.g., 80 gms slice x 10 guests = 800 gms = 0.8 kg cake
Top up a few grams & you could safely say a 1kg cake would suffice for 10 guests, keeping in mind the factors mentioned above.
Additional Tips
- Do consider picking up a few aluminium foil containers to give away leftover cake and desserts to some of your guests. This will ensure you are not with too much leftover in your refrigerator and that everyone has had a chance to taste the cake or other desserts.
- If you do not want to bother with cutting a large cake during the party, pastries in the same flavour is a great idea too. Order pre-cut slices of pastries for each guest. Simple!
The above is just a guide to help you with ordering. You know your guests best, so do make sure to accommodate everyone’s sweet tooth.
